Who we are
Where we are
We are two ex-pat Canadian/European artist-
designer-sailors who washed up on these
shores some years ago and liked it so much that
we decided to stay.
We are on the island of Faial in the Azores.
The nine islands of the Azores form an
Autonomous Region of Portugal. They have been settled for over five hundred
years (Columbus stopped here for supplies on his return from his first voyage to
the Americas). Our island, Faial, has long been a favourite with visitors as it had
the closest thing to a natural harbour in the islands. In the nineteenth century
American whaling ships stopped here to pick up experienced crews. Yachtsmen
have been stopping off here for over a hundred years as they voyage across the
Atlantic. Cable companies built relay stations here, and the mansions they built for
their supervisors remain. Pioneer aviators stopped here too as they ventured
across the ocean and Pan-Am Airways established a re-fuelling base here for their
Atlantic Clippers.
On the left of this page you will find links to more information about life in the
Azores, art by Roly and Iris, the voyages of the catamaran Oborea which first
brought us to these islands and much, much more.
