Iris Lawton is a self taught artist, although she took several courses in oil painting at the Toronto School of Art. She also studied graphic design and graduated from George Brown College in 1981. Her first solo exhibition was in 1986 at the Toronto Advertising Club. In 1991 she had her second solo exhibition at the Arcadia Gallery at Harbourfront, also in Toronto. In the Bahamas Iris, joined by Roly and the sculptor Pete Johnston, had an exhibition to launch Pete's new gallery at Little Harbour. Her work was added to and on display for 1992 to the end of 1993. After moving to Faial she first took part in an exibition of four artists, Quadros de Quatro, in 1999 at the Casa da Cultura in Horta and in 2001 she was part of a group showing of Açorean artists in Saõ Miguel , organised by the Açorean Ministry of Culture. In 2006 she was again part of a group show, Arte Contemporânia Cedrense, part of a cultural week in the town of Cedros, Açores.  In 2012 she had a solo exibition at the Biblioteca Pública e Arquivo Regional João José da Graça in Horta showing her new abstract works in mixed media and oils. Currently her work is oftentimes on display at her studio/gallery in Cedros, Faial.
